Painting Bruges at Twilight

Published on 21 November 2025 at 08:05

Bruges is a city that seems to ask to be painted. Especially at dusk, when the streetlights begin to glow, the water darkens, and the old houses reflect in the canals like in a mirror.

That evening I sat by the water with my gouache, and it felt as if time had slowed down. The famous Belfry tower rose above the city, illuminated by a soft golden light — a perfect accent for a winter scene. The air was already filled with a Christmas atmosphere: quiet music, the smell of hot chocolate, and the warm glow of garlands on the old façades.

Painting in Bruges feels like capturing a moment suspended between the past and the present. Twilight, reflections, lights, water… everything comes together into that one image you can never forget.
